Join a support group
Newly diagnosed people will have a number of questions that they either don’t want to ask a doctor
or feel a doctor won’t be able to answer. For this reason there is often a support group in each district or town. Your doctor or your local
hospital should be able to give you information about the nearest support group, and by joining you can start to meet people who know what you
are going through and how you are feeling.
These groups often contain individuals that were diagnosed many years before you and they know how to overcome problems associated with the
condition better than most. By joining one of these groups you will undoubtedly learn many practical tips and new ways of coping that will help
you to live with your asthma, and by sharing your worries and concerns you can get all of your questions answered by people who really know what
it is to live with asthma. It may be that you can also take members of your family along so that they too can learn about the disease and how
they can help you to cope with it.
Having support is an essential part of life and this is especially true when you are diagnosed with a chronic illness that may get worse over
time. The support of your family and friends can be one of the biggest boosts you can get, however it may be that you don’t want to express your
worries and concerns to them. This is where a support group can be a big help, as the people there will all have felt the same concerns at some
point in their lives and will be able to put your mind at ease without upset.
