Keep a clean house

Most people keep a clean house on a daily basis as a matter of course,

but for an asthmatic it is even more important that the house remains free of irritants and potential agents.

Dust mites in particular can cause asthmatics to cough, wheeze and have trouble breathing. Investing in a good vacuum cleaner and using it on a daily basis can greatly reduce the amount of dust within the air and on the furniture.

An air purifier can also help to clean the air and it is often a beneficial addition to an asthmatics house, especially if they suffer quite severely.

Washing the curtains and bed linen regularly can also help to keep dust and other irritants to a minimum.

If you have a pet, their fur can often cause asthmatic episodes, so you should try to keep their shedding under control. Groom them regularly and give them their own blanket or bed to sleep in so they don’t spread their fur to where you sit and sleep.

If you are thinking of getting a pet there are a number of dog and cat breeds that don’t shed their fur.
