Realise that you can not ignore your asthma
The sooner you realise that asthma is a life-long condition that needs to be treated continuously,
the sooner you will learn to cope with it. Being diagnosed with asthma might come as a shock, especially for people with no family history of
the condition, however it can not be ignored. Without treatment, an asthma attack can be fatal and thousands of people around the world die each
year because of the disease. In fact, over 5,000 people die in America alone each and every year because of poor asthma management.
You may initially be diagnosed with mild asthma and think that using your inhaler is not a big deal. However, asthma regularly progresses and
becomes more serious and refusing to treat the condition while it is mild may mean that it progresses a lot quicker than normal.
You can’t take a vacation from asthma, and you can’t decide that you don’t have the condition because you want a night out on the town and you
feel embarrassed puffing your inhaler. You can still do many of the things you did before diagnosis, the only difference being that you might
have to choose which clubs and bars to go to on your nights out. You will have to take your inhalers with you, just in case. Millions of people
have asthma; it’s a very common disease and using an inhaler is nothing to be ashamed of. The sooner you realise that, the sooner you will think
of your condition as a part of your life and make small changes to help you cope.
