Taking Your Asthma Medication

In addition to the inhalers that you should use whenever you feel the need,

you may also be prescribed daily corticosteroids that need to be taken religiously in order to prevent potential asthmatic attacks. These are also in the form of an inhaler, and right from the time you are diagnosed and prescribed daily medication, you need to get into the habit of taking them at the same time each day so you benefit as much as possible.

The type of corticosteroid inhaler you are prescribed will depend to a large extent on the severity of your asthma. Most types are required to be used first thing in the morning and again at night. Many newly diagnosed asthmatics are advised to construct a chart so they can write down exactly when they take their inhalers so they are constantly reminded to take them each morning and night. As they become more confident with their condition and taking daily medication becomes a way of life, the chart can be forgotten.

Unfortunately, even if you take your medication correctly there is still a chance of suffering an asthma attack that can’t be controlled by your inhaler. In cases like this a trip to the doctor will be necessary. It may take some time for the doctor and yourself to get your dosages correct, but by keeping a journal of your condition and visiting your doctor with any difficulties, the problem of dosage is normally resolved quickly and without further attacks.
